Top 5 Prospect Becomes A Redbird

November 21, 2019

LOUISVILLE, KY- Wednesday afternoon Male Guard Howard Fleming Jr. committed to Illinois State. This comes on the heels of his decision to cut his list to three programs. Wyoming and Austin Peay were the other two programs but in the end ISU Redbirds came out on top.

We got a moment to speak to Fleming Jr. about his decision and what made Illinois State stand out over Wyoming and Austin Peay. Here’s what he had to say about the school and his recruitment.

“What made them(Illinois State) stand out was them expressing the want/need of a point guard and since we first met they have been on me up to this point.”

So Wyoming was one of your final 3. What made them & their program stick out being so far from home & not known to be a basketball school?

“Coach Edwards was really on me and was coach Wise. They had success sending a kid to the league (NBA) Justin James and he was also a big guard. They said I was similar to him so they showed me a pretty nice game plan so it was something to definitely think about.”

So what is your goal or goals as a freshman at ISU?

“My goal as a freshman is to help my team win in any way I can like I love winning. I’ll do what I gotta do to win.”

We know you’re out recovering from a shoulder injury. Any timetable on when you’ll be able to get back on the floor? How serious is your injury?

“I got a little less then two months to get back to 100% and my injury isn’t that major. I’ve been through this before. I’m ok, just a little setback and no redshirting! I’m ready to play!

This is your last year at Male and your senior season. Depending on your health what are your main goals for this season?

“My goals this year is to win state. I wanna win the thing comeback and do what I love and leave it all out there with my brothers this one last time. we are going to give our city (Louisville) a show!”

Fleming also stated that,”Depending on when I get back on the court, I still want that Mr. Basketball award. Anything is possible and I’m about to show people.”

Fleming who is ranked as our number 5 prospect in our Class of 2020 Top 50 player rankings make him the 7th prospect in our top 10 to sign during the early signing period.

Here’s a little peek at some of Fleming’s superb athleticism, tremendous length, & bounce.
